The Spartan volleyball team won their homecoming contest Saturday morning in Thornton Gymnasium in thrilling come from behind fashion. AU defeated the visiting Eagles of Edgewood College in five sets, 3-2 (16-25, 15-25, 25-11, 25-13, 18-16).
The Spartans came out a little sluggish following their five set win the previous night over Maranatha Baptist, dropping the first two sets of the match and putting up little signs of fight in the process.
Following a serving contest intermission, the Spartans sprung to life, winning the third and fourth set in dominant fashion, winning set three 25-11 and the fourth set 25-13.
Junior outside hitter Amy Reynolds (seven kills), senior middle blocker Jill Smart (five kills) and sophomore outside hitter Robeska Sanchez (five kills) came to life in the third and fourth sets, leading the thrilling Spartan comeback.
The awakening set up a decisive fifth set match, AU's fourth straight home contest that has gone to a fifth and deciding set.
AU and Edgewood battled throughout the fifth set, trading points in the back and forth contest. The Spartans had a 17-16 lead with Reynolds stepping to the serving line. The Spartans stood strong and bringing home a 18-16 win and the 3-2 match victory.
The Spartans were led by Renolyds (13 kills and 19 digs), Smart (11 kills and 20 digs), junior outside hitter Michelle Sims had nine kills and 19 digs and setters, senior Christine Ozlanski (19 assists and 20 digs) and freshman Amanda Taylor (13 assists) kept the Spartans win streak alive.
The Eagles were led by freshman outside hitter Mallory Palmer (16 kills and 13 digs) and senior setter Ellie Peckham (18 assists and 12 digs).
The Spartans improve their record to 13-12; 6-1 NAC and will return to the court on , Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. against Wisconsin Lutheran College in Thornton Gymnasium.
