Spartan Men Win with Seventh Shutout of 2009

The Aurora University Spartan Men's soccer team defeated the Sabres of Marian University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Conference contest.

AU dominated play in the physical contest that had six yellow cards issued, three to each respective team. The Spartans out-shot the Sabres 27 to one on the day, with Spartan junior goalkeeper Kevin Soderstrom earning the victory with no saves. He teamed with fellow junior Jamie McGuire for the shutout win.

The Spartan's got on the scoreboard with a goal by junior

midfielder Mike Emma in the 22nd minute of the first half. His sixth goal of the season was assisted by junior Matt Reimer.

Spartan sophomore midfielder Matt Houghtaylen scored the second goal of the game in the 41st minute, he was unassisted on the play.

Spartan freshman goalkeeper turned forward Ethan Cashen topped off the victory with a goal in the 87th minute. For Cashen it was his second goal of the season and he was assisted by Emma.

With the victory the Spartans improve their record to 8-5-1 overall and are 4-4 in the NAC, while Marian falls to 4-10-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the NAC.
