The Aurora University Spartan Men’s soccer team posted their ninth shutout of the season, defeating the Eagles of Benedictine University 2-0 on AU's senior day Monday afternoon on Vago Field.

AU dominated play throughout the contest, as the Eagles were unable to put up a shot and Spartan junior goalkeeper Kevin Soderstrom easily posted his third shutout win of the season.

For the Spartans, they move within one more shutout on the 2009 season of tying the single season mark for shutouts, which is 10 set by AU men's teams in 1978, 1979 and 1990.

The Spartan’s got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute of action when junior defender Kyle Haumersen found the back of the Eagle net for the first time in 2009. Haumersen's goal came from a pass off the right foot of junior forward Nick Helmer.

The two teams played a scoreless remainder of the first half and most of the second half, despite the Spartans having numerous opportunities.

Eagle junior goalkeeper Orlando Esparza stopped 12 AU shot attempts and saw eight others come his direction but unable to get past him.

Spartan freshman forward Ethan Cashen topped off the victory with a goal in the 75th minute, his goal coming off an assist from fellow freshman forward Henry Gomez.

With the victory the Spartans improve their record to 11-5-1 overall and are 7-4 in the NAC, while Benedictine falls to 7-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the NAC.
