NAC Announces Football Postseason Awards

Budzinski (#48) was named the NAC Defensive Player of the Year
The Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) announced the 2009 Football Postseason Awards and All-Conference teams, which include members of the Spartan football program. The Spartan football
team finished the 2009 season with a 4-6 overall record and 2-5 in the NAC.

Senior linebacker Mike Budzinski (Minooka, IL/Minooka HS) was named the NAC Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference. In his final season with the Spartans, Budzinski recorded 104 tackles (40 solo and 64 assisted), two and a half quarterback sacks, one interception, three fumble recoveries and a blocked kick. Additionally, Budzinski concludes his career at AU as the all-time leading tackler with 322, surpassing current assistant coach Brian Fetterolf (
Funk
320 from 1986 to 1989). He also finishes with five career fumble recoveries (tied for third all-time), three of which came in 2009 which ties the all-time single season record.

In addition to Budzinski, NAC First-Team All-Conference honors went to senior defensive lineman Pat Funk (Morris, IL/Morris HS) and freshman punter Derek Powell (Colfax, IL/Ridgeview HS). Funk leaves AU tied for third with 20.5 career quarterback sacks. On the season he had 59 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Powell, in his first collegiate season, averaged 36.0 yards per
punt and had seven inside the 20 and three punts of over 50 yards.

Second-Team All-Conference recognitions went to senior running back Ryne Reder (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) and senior wide receiver Tim Young (Aurora, IL/Aurora Christian HS). Reder had 555 yards on 156 rushes and six touchdowns and 20 catches for 170 yards and one touchdown. He leaves AU second all-time in rushing yards with 3,052 on 683 rushes (most all-time) and 30
touchdowns (third most all-time). His runs of 88 and 87 yards are the two longest in AU history and his 3,348 total yards leave him third all-time in all-purpose yards as a Spartan. Young had a team high 21 catches for 397 yards and four touchdowns.

Honorable Mention selections include senior defensive lineman Mike DeVries (Princeville, IL/Princeville HS) and junior defensive back Jimmy Fierro (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North HS).
