The Aurora University Spartans defeated the Illinois College Blueboys 7-0 on perfect Sunday afternoon on Vago Field.
This victory brought Spartans to a 3-0 record and in those three contests, spanning 270 minutes have yet to allow a goal.
The scoring was led by junior midfielder Nick Helmer who scored three goals to tally a hat trick in the contest. His first goal, unassisted, came six minutes into the game and gave the Spartans a lead they would never relinquish.
Helmer was not all the Spartan offense, as freshman forward Bobby Gonella scored his first goal of the season in the 29th minute off an assist from junior defender Dan Rediger.
Helmer scored his second goal off a penalty kick in the 36th minute of the game.
Just before the halftime intermission, senior forwards James Heidorn and Tony Howell connected for the fourth AU goal of the half. For Heidorn it was his first goal of the season off a nice pass from Howell.
Helmer opened the second half scoring with his third goal in the 54th minute, this time from an assist by senior midfielder Justin Pederson.
The scoring was not over for the Spartans though, as sophomore forward Jim Kelly finished off the game with back to back goals less than a minute apart. The goals were his first two of the 2009 season.
The Spartan goalkeeper combination of freshman Ethan Cashen and junior Kevin Soderstrom combined for three saves in the shut out while extending their shutout string to 270 minutes between the two netminders.
AU will be back in action on September 11 at 4:00 pm versus Fonbonne College at Vago Field.
