Spartans Kick MS and defeat Principia 1-0

Spartans and Panthers prior to kickoff on Kick MS Day
Box Score On a beautiful afternoon on AU's Vago Field, the Spartan women's soccer team took on the visiting Principia College Panthers in a non-conference contest in front of some special guests.
While the Spartans would go on to defeat the visiting Panthers, the game had a much different feel and meaning with the pre-game festivities celebrating the women's soccer program's fight to Kick MS (Multiple Sclerosis).

Led by AU senior Westbrook Walendzik, the Spartan women's soccer team with help from Principia College raised over $2,000 for the National MS Society with Kick MS Day on Vago Field. In the week's leading up to today's contest, the Spartans sold Kick MS t-shirts and got donations from various local Aurora businesses that were raffled off during halftime of today's game.

AU Head Coach Kanute Drugan and the two opponents gathered at midfield prior to kick-off with Drugan announcing today's accomplishments and then reading a touching letter that he received from an AU student, whose own mother is battling MS, thanking the teams for their generosity for today's event.
As the game got underway, the Spartans wasted little time in taking a lead on the Panthers. Exactly 9:00 in the first-half, junior forward Raquel Rodriguez found the back of the Panther goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

That lead would hold up the remaining 81 minutes of play as the AU defense and Spartan goalkeeper Liz Wong collected the shutout win.

With the win, AU improved to 5-3 overall and are 2-0 in the NAC while Principia is now 3-2-1 overall.

A special thanks goes to Kirhofer Sports, Colonial Cafe, Hounds Blue Moon and Mother's who were the local Aurora businesses that had donated items or certificates raffled off for Kick MS Day.
