Box Score The Aurora University women's soccer team defended their undefeated record
Wednesday afternoon against Northern Athletics Conference foe Dominican University. The Spartans took advantage of their huge edge in possession to win the match 2-0 and clinch a share of the NAC regular season championship, the seventh straight title for AU.
The first half saw both defenses playing extremely well as neither was able to generate too many quality chances. The AU defense didn't even allow a shot in the first period.
The only scoring chance game when Spartan senior midfielder
Kaitlyn Crohan found herself in behind the Stars' defense on a breakaway. However, Dominican keeper Sara Stepanovich did well to come off of her line and get a touch to the ball to force it wide of the net.
The teams went into halftime tied 0-0. The Spartans held an advantage in shots at 10-0 to go along with their hefty amount of possession.
Just seven minutes into the second half freshman forward
Nicci Bermudes found herself on the end of a chipped through ball from sophomore
Lisa Bajkowski. Bermudes calmly finished off the chance by placing the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
AU struck again just five minutes later. Sophomore Nicole Wolf challenged the Dominican defense on the dribble and was fouled hard inside of the penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty kick to the Spartans. Bermudes stepped up to take the penalty and converted on the opportunity by beating the keeper to her left hand side.
With a 2-0 lead as a cushion the Spartans continued to posses the ball and closed out the game by not allowing Dominican any scoring chances.
Liz Wong got her ninth win of the season (9-0-1) in her return in goal for the Spartans. The win improves AU's record to 16-0-1 on the season and 11-0 in the NAC. With the loss Dominican falls to 7-9 overall and 6-4 in the NAC.
The Spartans will be in action once again as they travel to Watertown, Wisconsin on
Saturday, October 20 as they look to close out their regular season conference schedule against Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Kick off is scheduled for noon.
