The Aurora University hockey team traveled north to take on another future conference opponent in the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders on Saturday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. AU built a 5-1 lead midway through the game but could not hold on as they fell 6-5 in overtime.
Just as they did in their game on Wednesday night, the Spartans took an early lead. 4:40 into the game defensemen
Gregory Sauers gave AU a 1-0 lead with an assist from
Patrick Sofer.
Eight minutes later the Spartans added to their lead with Mike Mikulan scoring at 12:38 with assists from
Trevor Hoth and
Rihards Marenis. Two an a half minutes later the Spartans tallied a power play goal and had a commanding 3-0 lead. Hoth scored the goal with Marenis and
Anthony Pnewski assisting on the play.
Just before the end of the first period, MSOE scored on AU goaltender
Michael Kitts on the power play, sending the teams to intermission with a 3-1 AU lead.
The second period saw the Spartans continue to take the play to the Raiders as AU scored 3:54 into the period with Hoth scoring his second of the night on assists from Mikulin and Marenis. The combination connected again at 14:45 with Mikulin scoring his second of the night and Hoth and Marenis adding assists. The goal have AU a 5-1 lead with just over a period to play.
But in the final 4:01 of the second period, the Raiders scored three times with the last goal coming on the power play. At the end of two periods, the Spartans lead but by a slim one goal advantage of 5-4.
AU maintained the one goal lead until 7:33 remained in the third period. That is when the host Raiders were able to complete their comeback and tie the game 5-5.
Neither team would light the lamp in the final seven minutes and the contest headed to overtime. Another milestone for AU as they played in their first NCAA overtime contest.
As the overtime session looked like it would come to an end with a tie, MSOE would have none of that. With 18 seconds left in the overtime, the Raiders scored to send the Spartans home with an overtime loss.
With that overtime loss, AU is now 0-5 in the NCAA and 5-6 overall. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on
Sunday, November 30 when they travel to Milwaukee School of Engineering. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
