Winning ways a great combo for Spartans and Wyeth

Championship golf is what has become the norm and expectation for Aurora University Spartan men's and women's golf since Justin Wyeth has assumed the reigns.

When Wyeth took over the reigns of the AU women's golf program in the fall of 2010, a rebuild was in order as the team he inherited did not have enough players to compete as a team for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship. He quickly went to work to restore the program, which had won the NACC's first three championships, to the top of the conference. Wyeth brought in a recruiting class that produced on the course and won the program's fourth NACC crown in the 2014-2015 season.

In the successful 2014-2015 season he was named the NACC Coach of the Year after leading the AU women to the program's fourth NACC Championship and the school 's first NCAA Division III Championships appearance. The Coach of the Year was his first of what has become four such honors in the last four seasons.

In the midst of the beginning of a successful rebuild of the women's program, Wyeth was asked and accepted the challenge of becoming the Spartan men's golf coach and rebuild that program as well. The men's team finished third in his first year while shooting the best round of the spring NACC Championship.

"Balancing both teams isn't easy, but I lay the foundation for the team from the day I begin the recruitment process," said Wyeth. "I coach teams, not individuals or genders. I coach players who want to better the team and I treat all players the same. I try to make it an atmosphere that is fun to be apart of every day. I lead by example that hard work will pay off and that has lead to the success we have had in both programs."

In the three full seasons he has been the Head Coach of both the Spartan men's and women's program's, Wyeth has turned both teams into conference champions. The AU men claimed the program's second conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship rounds with the first time coming in the 2009-2010 season. The AU women have won three NACC crowns and finished in second just shy of a fourth straight championship and NCAA appearance. 22 Spartans have been awarded NACC All-Conference recognition under Wyeth and Madison Erickson was named the 2017-2018 NACC Women's Golf Freshman of the Year.

At the national level, Wyeth's teams both have shown well with the top finishes by both the men and women by a NACC program. The 2017-2018 men finished 23rd, eight strokes outside of the cut and the 23rd place finish marked the best ever by a NACC men's program and the 2015-2016 18th place finish by the AU women was the best finish by a NACC women's program.

The love Wyeth has for Aurora University comes as no surprise since he was a member of the AU men's golf 2006 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference championship team. In that season he was selected as NIIC All-Conference, AU Team MVP and a team captain.
