Aurora University junior quarterback Gavin Zimbelman had a record setting afternoon on Saturday in the Spartans season opening 50-40 victory over #25 St. Norbert College.
With the performance, Zimbelman has been recognized by the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference as the NACC Offensive Player of the Week and D3football.com as the quarterback on the week 1 Team of the Week.
In the win, Zimbelman set AU single game records for touchdowns, yards, completions, attempts and long pass play from scrimmage in the contest. He finished the day 33-of-52 for 497 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. He connected on a 92 yard touchdown pass among his completions to nine different AU receivers. The seven touchdown passes on the day set a NACC record as well.
The D3football.com Team of the Week honor is the first for a Spartan football player since defensive back Mike Langhurst in week 5 of the 2010 season.
Zimbelman and the 1-0 Spartans are in action next on Saturday, September 14 when they travel to Elmhurst College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Elmhurst, Illinois.
