The Aurora University Spartan men's tennis team hosted a weekend doubleheader Saturday afternoon, taking on the visiting Sabres of Marian University and Eagles of Edgewood College. The Spartans would split
the match-up, defeating Marian 9-0 and falling to Edgewood 5-4.
AU opened the day with a decisive 9-0 win over Marian. Leading the way for the Spartans was No. 1 singles player
Ricky Hernandez (won 6-1, 7-6 (7-2)). To start the match, Hernandez paired with
Brian Koski in No. 1 doubles and won 8-6.
The Spartans swept all nine matches with singles players , No. 2 Koski (won 6-4, 6-2), No. 3
Matt Butler (6-2, 6-1), No. 4
Brett Wilder (6-2, 6-0), No. 5
Anthony Emmanouil (6-3, 6-1) and No. 6
Connor Propp (6-2, 6-4). In doubles action, Butler and Emmanouil won at No. 2 (8-0) and Wilder and Propp won at No. 3 (8-1).
In the afternoon contest against Edgewood College, AU fell behind early 2-1 in doubles action. Hernandez and Koski won at No. 1 doubles 8-2.
Hernandez then brought AU a win at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3) to tie the contest 2-2. Koski won at No. 2 (6-3, 6-2) and Emmanouil won at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3) to cap off the Spartan winners on the day.
The Spartans will travel on Thursday,
April 12 when they head to Dubuque, Iowa. AU will take on University of Dubuque at 1:30 pm and Loras College at 4:30 pm.
