Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 After dropping the first game of a three game series at MacMurray College, the Aurora University baseball team swept the doubleheader on Saturday, winning 8-0 and 14-2.
Game One
Aurora 8Â MacMurray 0
Senior pitcher
Josh Kwasny earned the shutout victory as he scattered four hits, walking one and struck out seven. The only danger he faced came in the bottom of the sixth when he gave up two hits and the lone error of the game for AU loaded the bases with no outs. Kwasny got help from his defense as MacMurray hitters lined out to second and then to third baseman
Tim Brann who stepped on third for the double-play.
Offensively, AU got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a two run home run from
Dillon Popovich which scored
Zach Flores who reached on a hit by pitch.
AU tallied one run in the sixth when
Jared Swain scored when Brann reached on an error and the Spartans poshed across five runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game wide open for Kwasny.
In the seventh,
Nick Turner reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, he advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher and then to third on a balk. He scored in the same at bat on a single by
Ryan Rybakowski. A few batters later, Flores singled to drive in Rybakowski and
Tanner Oymaian for a 6-0 Spartan lead. Popovich then singled to drive in
Daniel Walczak and
Jordan White who had come on to run for Flores.
Kwasny set down the Highlanders in order in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Game Two
Aurora 14Â MacMurray 2
The AU offense got on the scoreboard first again in game two with a similar feel to how the first inning in game one began. Oymaian was hit by pitch and came around to score on a Popovich single for a 1-0 AU lead.
MacMurray however was able to answer back off Spartan starting pitcher
Tyler Findlay. A two out walk came back to bite Findlay as a double scored the runner who reached on the walk to tie the game 1-1 after one inning.
In the second, Spartan sophomore catcher
Rafer Cooley walked, stole second and then eventually scored on a ground out by Oymaian to give AU and Findlay the lead back.
As Findlay began to settle in on the mound, the Spartan bats began to give him some room to work with by adding runs.
AU got two runs in the fourth inning with Cooley singling and scoring on a Rybakowski single, and Rybakowski scoring when
Mike Torres reached on an error.
Five runs were added by AU in the fifth inning on three hits and one Macmurray error. Swain walked and immediately stole second. With one out, Cooley reached on an error with Swain moving to third. After Walczak walked to load the bases, Rybakowski struck again with a two run single for a 6-1 AU lead. The next hitter, Oymaian doubled to score Walczak and Rybakowski for an 8-1 lead. The scoring was not done though as Torres drove in Oymaian with a single.
The offensive on slaught continued in the sixth inning with AU adding five more runs on seven hits. Head Coach Lane Stahl was able to tap into his bench who came up with good swings and runs.
Jake Monson, Cooley, Torres and
Adam Lipscomb all drove in runs in the inning.
Freshman
Tyler Williams came in to relieve Findlay in the bottom of the sixth and Macmurray was able to get a run off Williams who struck out two in the inning.
Colin Hart then relieved Williams in the seventh and he struck out the side and sealed the 14-2 AU win.
With the sweep, AU is now 4-9 overall. Next scheduled action for the Spartan baseball team comes on Tuesday,
March 18, 2014 when they host North Park University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Solfisburg Park in Aurora, Ill.
