2015 opener comes up just short for AU women

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team hosted the visiting Knights of Calvin College on Saturday, February 28, AU's 2015 home and season opener. The Spartans lost by a close 14-12 margin.
 
The teams took the field and Calvin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. The Spartans got going on offense at 17:47 with a goal from Andrea Colford, her first of her career.
 
Over the next 10 minutes, the Spartans and Knights traded scores with AU getting unassisted tallies from Kenny Hughes, Lexie Wright and Colford. With 7:50 to play, AU trailed 5-4.

Calvin scored the final three goals of the first-half and took an 8-4 lead into halftime.

The second-half started off with a bang as Calvin scored 16 seconds in to take a 9-4 lead. AU answered right back with three consecutive goals, from Hughes, a free-position goal from Rachel Cochran and the combo matched up with Hughes scoring off a Cochran assist. With over 25 minutes left, AU trailed 9-7.

Over the next 10 minutes though, Calvin out-scored AU 4-2 to push their lead to four at 13-9. The two AU goals were from Hughes and Danielle Morgan on a free-position shot.
AU maintained pressure on the Knights and added a pair of goals from Hughes and Wright to get back within two at 13-11 with almost nine minutes left to play. After a Calvin goal, AU would score one more time with 11 seconds to play as Colford added a hat-trick to her first collegiate game highlights.

When the final horn sounded, AU fell 14-12. With the loss, AU is 0-1 on the season. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse comes on Tuesday, March 3 when they travel to Kalamazoo College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. (EST) in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
