In the 2015 home opener for the Aurora University baseball team, the Spartans played host to the Raiders of Milwaukee School of Engineering. AU swept the doubleheader, winning 11-1 in 8 innings in game one and 8-4 in game two.
In game one, the Spartans scored in each of the first five innings to give starting pitcher
Kyle Manske a comfortable lead to work with on a blustery spring day at Solfisburg Park. As Manske kept the Raiders off balance, the AU offense started clicking, building a 8-1 lead after five innings.
The Spartans then ended the game early by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth with the final game ending run being scored by
Dillon Popovich on an infield single from
Sean Stevens.
Manske went the complete game to pick up his third win (3-0) of the season. Popovich went four for five with two doubles, two runs batted in and three runs scored.
Game tw once again saw the Spartans build an early lead, this time for junior pitcher
Tyler Findlay. After a scoreless first, the Spartans added a run in the second, three in the third and another in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, MSOE got to Findlay, scoring three times to cut into the AU lead.
After each team added another run, AU in the sixth and MSOE in the seventh, the Spartans added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. AU manufactured their two runs, executing a suicide squeeze from
Ryan Rybakowski that scored
Harry Vickers and
Cale Sparks and Mike Chervin executed a first and third play with Chervin stealing home as Sparks was thrown out in a run down.
Findlay earned the win, pitching five innings and he is now 3-1 on the season while
Brent Bergeson earned a save with four innings of relief work.
With the sweep, AU is now 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan baseball team comes on
Saturday, April 4, 2015 when they travel to Lakeland College for a NACC doubleheader. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m. in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
