The second game of an originally scheduled doubleheader between the Aurora University Spartan and Concordia University Chicago Cougar baseball teams turned into a high scoring wild affair that the Spartans held on to win 11-9.
AU scored a run in the top of the first inning. A two-out base hit by
Dillon Popovich was manufactured into a run when Jeff Gersch singled to score Popovich. Concordia would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning off AU starting pitcher
Tyler Findlay.
Down one at 2-1, the AU bats went to work quickly in the top of the second. A one out walk by
Ryan Rybakowski got the Spartans ignited as a single from
Cale Sparks and double from
Danny Walczak followed and the game was tied 2-2.
Tanner Oymaian then hit a sacrifice fly to score Sparks which was then followed by a Cougar error and double from
Adam Lipscomb and single by Gersch accounted for a five run inning and a 6-2 AU lead.
After Findlay set down the Cougars, the AU offense added three more runs in the third on four hits with a triple from Oymaian being the big play of the frame. Concordia would get two runs off Findlay in the bottom of the third but the AU bats answered again in the fourth. Gersch led the inning with a double and scored on a single from
Harry Vickers.
The crazy contest continued with Concordia scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth forcing AU Head Coach
Adam Stevens to call on the bullpen and
Brent Bergeson.
With the score 10-8, both relief pitchers from each side settled in calmed the high scoring contest. Bergeson would throw 3-2.3innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one run before giving way to
Colin Hart who threw a scoreless eighth inning.
In the ninth inning and the score still 10-8, AU got back on the offensive. Sparks reached with a one out single and after a walk and wild pitch, he would score on a sacrifice fly out from Oymaian.
Hart started the ninth for AU but after an error, hit batsman and single, Concordia scored one run and was threatening with the winning run stepping to the plate. Stevens again called on his bullpen and senior
Henry Erickson. On his fifth pitch, he induced a grounder to Oymaian at short who stepped on second before throwing on to first for a game ending double-play and a Spartan victory.
With the win, AU is now 19-14 overall and 8-8 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan baseball team comes on
Wednesday, April 22, 2015 when they host Carthage College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Solfisburg Park in Aurora, Illinois.
