Spartans sweep Muskies on the road

The Aurora University Spartan baseball team made the long journey to Lakeland College and swept the Muskies in a pair of late inning victories.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS
Adam Lipscomb was three for five with a double, four runs batted in and one run scored.
Cole Davis was two for three with one run batted in.
Jeff Woods was one for three with a run scored at the plate and threw three innings in relief for the win, allowing no runs, no hits and struck out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lakeland scored the games first run on a solo home run in the bottom of the first.
- AU answered with a two run inning in the second. Adam Lipscomb led off with a single and was followed by Mike Cherven who flew to left but the Muskie fielder dropped the ball. Cole Davis and Nicholas Mathey followed with run scoring singles and AU led 2-1. The inning would end on a fly-out from Ryan Rybakowski and Davis being thrown out at the plate for a double-play.
- Lakeland scored runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead.
- In the fifth, AU again scored twice, taking advantage of another Muskie error and two hits from Rybakowski and Lipscomb.
- Lakeland tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning, manufacturing the run on two hit.
- Over the next three innings, neither team scratched out a hit with only the Spartans leaving two runners in separate innings on base.
- In the ninth inning, AU got a lead-off single from then relief pitcher Jeff Woods. With one out, Jeffrey Mayes singled and with two outs, Dillon Popovich walked to load the bases. Adam Lipscomb stepped to the plate and hit a bases clearing double that gave AU a 7-4 lead.
- In the bottom of the inning, Woods continued to shut the door on the Muskies and held on for the 7-4 AU win.

Aron Okamoto threw 2-1/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and struck out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- AU scored first in game two with the first run coming in the second. With one out, Cole Davis doubled and the scored on a single from Nick Turner.
- In the third, AU tallied another run. A lead off single from Jeffrey Mayes got the inning started and he would later score on a sacrifice fly fro Dillon Popovich.
- In the fourth inning, AU continued to score as Jeff LaPage doubled with one out and scored on a single from Ryan Rybakowski.
- Lakeland tied the game in the bottom of the inning with three runs and three hits with a home run and double scoring runs.
- Lakeland chased AU starter Tyler Findlay in the fifth with Aron Okamoto coming on in relief with the bases loaded. After a run scoring wild pitch, Okamoto limited the Muskies the remainder of his appearance.
- The Spartans took advantage of the Muskie defense once again in the sixth inning after a lead off single from Davis, he would eventually come around to score an unearned run and tie the game 4-4.
- AU pieced together some two out magic in the seventh to regain the lead. Jeff Woods singled and eventually scored on a single from Adam Lipscomb.
- With Woods on the mound for the eighth, Lakeland got a solo home run to tie the game entering the final inning.
- Just as they did in game one, AU had their bats come to life in the ninth. Mayes and Woods walked to start the inning. With one out and two on, Lipscomb hit a three run blast to left field and gave AU an 8-5 lead.
- Woods made quick work of the Muskies in the ninth and sent AU south with the sweep.
