Spartan baseball sweeps Wisconsin Lutheran in dramatic fashion

The Aurora University Spartan baseball team swept the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in come from behind fashion in game two after handily winning game one.

GAME ONE INFORMATION – Saturday, May 7, 2016

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS
Elias McMahon threw seven innings for the win.
Nick Turner was three for four with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Jeff Woods was three for four with two runs batted in and one run scored.
Ryan Rybakowski was three for four with two runs scored.
Dillon Popovich was two for three with a double, two runs scored and one run batted in.
Jeffrey Mayes was three for five with two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
- AU answered immediately with four runs in the second on three singles, a walk and hit by pitch before an out was made.
- The Spartans added three runs in the fifth with a walk off play working to perfection. All three runs came with two outs.
- Two more runs crossed the plate for AU in the sixth as they pounded out three more hits in the inning.
- In the seventh, AU continued to score as they loaded the bases on three straight singles to start the inning and saw two runs cross the plate. AU led 11-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.
- Wisconsin Lutheran added two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth but AU won 11-5.

Cale Sparks was one for one with one run scored and one run batted in.
Cole Thompson was one for one with one run batted in.
AU scored six runs in the top of the ninth as they were trailing 4-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wisconsin Lutheran scored single runs in the second, third, fifth and eighth innings to lead 4-0 going into the top of the ninth.
- Heading into the ninth, AU had managed only three hits in the game and no significant scoring threats.
- Adam Lipscomb led off the ninth with a single which was followed by a Cole Davis double. AU went to the bench for pinch hitters as Cale Sparks singled to score Lipscomb and Cole Thompson singled to score Davis and AU was down two with the tying run on first. Ryan Rybakowski then singled to score Sparks and immediately after, Rybakowski and pinch runner Cody Gregory pulled off a double steal. AU had the tying run 90 feet away and the go ahead run on second. Gregory scampered home on a wild pitch to tie the game. With two outs, Jeff Woods doubled to score Rybakowski with the run that gave AU the lead. Dillon Popovich scored Woods when he hit a ball hard at the Warrior shortstop who committed an error.
- Leading 6-4, Woods came on in the ninth and earned his sixth save of the season.
