Free passes big story in Spartans pair of losses

The Aurora University and Wabash College baseball teams met for the second time early in the 2017 season on Friday with a twin bill at Wabash. AU fell 9-8 in game one, seeing a pair of leads disappear in the late innings and then dropped the second game 8-4 behind one bad inning.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS/LEADERS - GAME ONE vs. Wabash
- Spartan Adam Lipscomb hit a solo home run in the first inning to give AU a 1-0 lead.
- Wabash tied the game in the fourth after a leadoff triple scored on a wild pitch.
- AU scored three runs in the fifth thanks to singles from Jeff Mayes, Jeff Woods and Michael Fidler. Lipscomb also reached by a hit by pitch and would score.
- The bottom half of the inning saw Wabash start the inning with a pair of walks and two hits before Chris Roycroft relieved Elias McMahon. Roycroft allowed a single before striking out the side to preserve a 4-3 AU lead.
- In the seventh, Lipscomb began another AU rally. He again reached on a hit by pitch and following a walk to Woods, Fidler doubled and a Cole Davis single drove in runs. After 6-1/2 innings, AU led 7-3.
- With one out in the eighth, Wabash tied the game thanks to four AU walks, a single, double and sac fly.
- A lead-off walk started the ninth for AU as Austin Wiskow reached, stole second with two outs and scored on a single from Nick Turner.
- A lead-off double and walk started the ninth for Wabash and with two outs, a double scored two for the 9-8 final score.

- Adam Lipscomb was one for three with a home run, three runs scored and one run batted in.
- Michael Fidler was two for three with a double, two runs batted in and one run scored.
- Jeff Woods was two for four with two runs scored and one run batted in.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS/LEADERS - GAME TWO vs. Wabash
- AU saw Wabash take a 1-0 lead in the first with a one out triple and sac fly.
- A two-out walk in the third to Adam Lipscomb produced a run as he would score on a double from Jeff Woods.
- Three walks and four hits in the bottom of the fifth led to six Wabash runs and AU trailed 7-1.
- The Spartans answered in the top of the sixth with one out, Woods was hit by a pitch. That was followed by singles from Michael Fidler, Cole Davis and Cale Sparks before Nick Turner drew a walk and Mike Cherven hit a sac fly to cut the score to 7-4.
- AU would not threaten the rest of the game and Wabash added a single run in the eighth for the 8-4 final score.

- Jeff Woods was one for three with a double, one run scored and one run batted in.
