Aurora University today announced the promotion of
Jeff Fellers to head coach of the AU men and women's track and field programs. Fellers is the fourth Head Coach of the AU Track and Field programs since the sports were reintroduced to campus in 2003 and first Spartan alum to assume the duties.
Â
"We are excited and fortunate to have
Jeff Fellers carry on the success of the AU track and field programs," said Director of Athletic
Jim Hamad. "Having an individual on staff capable of stepping into the role of head coach and keep the expectations of the program as high as ever is a benefit to AU and our student-athletes."
Â
Fellers assumes the duties as the head coach of the AU track programs after Brandon Sturman departed the Spartans for another professional opportunity. He inherits a program that has won five Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference indoor and outdoor men's and women's championships in the last two seasons and 23 total since 2003.
Â
No stranger to the Spartan men's and women's track program, Fellers was a student-athlete at AU and has served as an assistant coach at AU for six years beginning in 2013. After two years as a graduate assistant, Fellers moved over to an assistant coach position prior to the 2015-2016 season. The last two seasons, Fellers was promoted to the head assistant coach and performed many of the day to day duties within the program.
Â
"I would like to thank the AU administration, Dr Sherrick, Dr. Lora deLacey and
Jim Hamad for this great opportunity," said Fellers. "AU Track and Field is without a doubt in a great spot right now. The coaches who preceded me, Kluckhohn, Chapman, and Sturman have built the program, having set the bar very high. I have learned a lot from each of them over the years and am eager to continue down the path that they have laid. Being the first alumni to take over the program means a lot to me, and I know the other alumni have high expectations for this program as well. I look forward to the challenge. With the support staff, coaching staff, returning student-athletes, and incoming recruits I am confident and excited in what our future holds here at AU."
Â
In his time at AU, Fellers has coached two All-Americans including a national runner-up, four national qualifiers, over 25 conference champions, over 40 All-Conference Performers, and six Conference Records in the Vault and Relays. While also helping to lead the AU program as a whole to 57 National Qualifiers, 36 All-American's, and two National Champion's since 2013.
As an athlete for the Spartans, Fellers captured three conference titles in the Pole Vault and was a part of the conference winning Distance Medley Relay in 2007. Â He was an eight-time All-Conference performer in Track and Field and the school and conference record holder in the Pole Vault when he graduated. During his time at AU, Fellers also played football and helped lead the Spartans to a conference title and the Division III Playoffs in 2008. He is in the top-10 All-Time for All-Purpose Yards. Â
