Spartans sweep with big game one come back

The Aurora University softball team swept the doubleheader on Wednesday morning, using a big game one come from behind win to vault them to a game two win. AU defeated Saint Joseph's College Maine 10-6 in game one then knocked off Illinois College 4-0 in game two.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME ONE vs. Saint Joseph's College Maine
- The early portion of the game did not look good for the Spartans as SJCM scored five times in the second inning to lead 5-0.
- AU would answer right back though in the top of the third. Bryanna Perez and Jemma Fiehweg led off by reaching via a hit by pitch.
- With two outs in the inning, Ashley Talaga doubled to score two. 
- Megan Schwartz followed with a two-run home run and AU was back in the game at 5-4.
- SJCM added a run in the bottom of the inning and Spartan freshman Cassaty Farnum came on in relief of starter Steph Renner.
- The hit by pitch added the Spartans again in the fourth as Cassidy Rourke added a run.
- AU was trailing by one at 6-5 when they came to hit in the top of the seventh. Four singles and an error led to the Spartans putting up a five spot of their own. A two-run single from Aly Teixeira was the big single of the frame.
- Hannah Tomasko came on the pitch the seventh, getting three strikeouts and AU was victorious 10-6.

SPARTAN TOP PERFORMERS - GAME ONE vs. Saint Joseph's College Maine
- Cassaty Farnum pitched four innings of relief to earn the win, allowing no runs and striking out three.
- Megan Schwartz was three for four with a home run, three runs batted in and one run scored.
- Ashley Talaga was one for three with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
- Aly Teixeira was two for four with two runs batted in.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME TWO vs. Illinois College
- AU wasted little time in scoring in the contest as Brianna Lewis led off with a walk and scored on a Josie Lytton double.
- Later in the inning, Alexa Rayborn squeezed Lytton in for the second run before Aly Teixeira doubled to score Bryanna Perez and AU led 3-0.
- The three runs was all starter Hannah Tomasko would need as she kept the Illinois College hitters off balance, striking out nine straight batters from the third through fifth innings.
- An insurance run crossed the plate for AU in the bottom of the sixth with Ashley Talaga and Mckenzie Flores both hitting doubles and Talaga scoring.
- Tomasko gave up her first hit, a bunt single with one out in the seventh, then struck out the final two IC hitters to earn the shutout, one hit win.

SPARTAN TOP PERFORMERS- GAME TWO vs. Illinois College
- Hannah Tomasko tossed a one hit complete game shutout for the win while striking out 16.
- Ashley Talaga was two for three a double and one run scored.
- Jemma Fiehweg was two for three
- Josie Lytton was one for three with a double, one run scored and one run batted in.
- Aly Teixeira was one for three with a double and one run batted in.

UP NEXT
Next action for the Spartan softball team comes on Thursday, March 5 when they compete in the final day of the spring trip in Clermont, Florida. AU takes on Muskingum University at 9:15 am and John Carroll University at 11:30 am.
