Spartan women open 2023 season with explosive 9-0 shutout

The Aurora University women's hockey team returned to the ice for their first contest of the 2023 season Saturday afternoon against the Northland College. The Spartans 
continued their winning ways, securing a dominant 9-0 over the LumberJills.

How it happened
- The Spartans opened up the scoring frenzy with two goals in the first ten minutes of the first period. 
- Leading scorer Darci Matson got the Spartans on the board 3:07 into the first period. She was assisted by Madison Gasper and Marisa Trevino
- Midway through the period, Haley Knauf extended the Spartans lead 2-0. Knauf was assisted by Anna Brenner
- AU led 2-0 going to the first intermission.
- 4:12 into the second period the starting line found the back of the LumberJill net once again.  Darci Matson tallied her second goal of the night on assists from Madison Gasper and Marisa Trevino
- Bethany Koman joined in on the scoring action to extend the Spartan lead 4-0. Mak Cooke and Allyson Richards recorded the assists.
- With less than three minutes remaining, Rachel Campoli tallied her first of the night, assisted by Bethany Koman and Allyson Richards.
- AU led 5-0 through two periods of play.
- The scoring frenzy continued less than a minute into the third period. Mak Cooke and Darci Matson found Bethany Koman to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead with 19:03 left to play.
- Ava Eid would add herself onto the scoring sheet with an unassisted power play tally.
- Midway through the third, Bethany Koman completes the hat trick with three goals on an assist from Darci Matson.
- Ellie Visser would score 14:12 into the period and the Spartans led 9-0. 
- The Spartans would end victorious, 9-0.
