Spartan women's lacrosse NCAA bound

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team will head to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships for the third time in program history. The Spartans received a Pool A berth as they finished the regular season with a 17-2 overall record and won the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship.
 
The Spartans will travel to the University of Mount Union regional and take on the host Purple Raiders on Saturday, May 13. Game time has been set for a 5:00 p.m. opening draw in Alliance, Ohio. The winner between the Spartans and Purple Raiders will play St. John Fisher University on Sunday, May 14 with a 5:00 p.m. start.

The Spartan women's lacrosse program, under the direction of Head Coach Christina Fried, will make its third consecutive NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships appearance. On the season, AU was 2-1 against their opponents who also made the 2023 NCAA field of 46.

AU is led by senior midfielder Monique Gibson, senior attack Bailey Simpson and senior midfielder Jalyn Yaukovitz. The trio won the NACC Midfielder, Attack and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Gibson is the AU leader with 102 points on 78 goals, 24 assists and has 124 draw controls, 45 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers. Simpson has 65 goals and 36 assists for 101 points while also picking up 32 ground balls and causing 17 turnovers. Yaukovitz had 35 caused turnovers, 63 ground balls and 74 draw controls while adding 53 goals and 19 assists from her defensive midfield position. 

As a team, AU averages 17.53 goals per game while allowing 6.32 per game. The Spartans have converted on .594 of their free-position opportunities. Defensively, AU has caused 178 turnovers and has been successful on .802 of their clears.
