The Aurora University Women's Track and Field team competed in the Chicagoland Indoor Championship at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
Deedee Colon Maldonado had a fantastic showing in the mile, winning the event in 4:53.46. She raced out to a large lead from the start and never relinquished it, winning the race by six seconds. Her time also improved upon her previous school record by second seconds and moves her up to second in the nation.
Aurora's middle-distance women had an impressive day, racing tough in each heat. The 1,000-meter saw two new names enter the school top-10 list. Ana Ponce finished in eighth place in a time of 3:28.30. She is now fourth in school history in the event. Natalie Flores was not far behind, running 3:40.14 to finish 14th overall. Her time is good for tenth in school history. In the 800-meter, Mika Fields finished ninth overall in 2:30.53. Freshman Susana Martinez finished in 2:32.57, winning her heat with a fiery final lap. Her effort earned her a 13th place finish overall.
Marisa Janecek finished seventh in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 13.47m. She also had a strong showing in the shot put, throwing 10.05m to finish 13th. Paige Chapin finished close behind in the shot put, in 14th place with a mark of 10.04m.
Up next, the Spartans will compete in the F. Lee Slick Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, IL on Friday, February 21.
