Spartans Split Friday Twin Bill behind Hogan complete game shutout

The Aurora University baseball team remained in Winter Haven, Florida for a doubleheader on Friday, starting with a battle against the University of Mount Union Raiders. AU took an 11-4 loss in their first matchup, before shutting out Bethel University 7-0 in their second game fueled on the back of a complete game shutout from Conner Hogan.

How it happened
Mount Union:
- Mount Union got out to a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.
- In the top of the third, the Raiders took a 3-0 lead over AU.
- The Spartans came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, as Joe Lukancic scored on a Riley Buck ground out.
- Two batters later, Jaden Holgado drove in Logan Riley with an RBI single to cut the AU deficit to 3-2.
- In the top of the fourth, Mount Union scored two more runs to take a 5-2 lead.
- That lead stretched to 6-2 in the sixth inning.
- In the top of the seventh, the Spartans saw their deficit reach nine runs at 11-2.
- AU got two more back in their half of the seventh with a sac-fly each from Brayden Gorecki and Holgado, but would eventually fall to the Raiders 11-4.

Bethel:
- The AU offense erupted in the top of the third inning, as Kyle Mack started the rally with an RBI single that scored Lukancic.
- Two batters later, Matthew Washington roped a bases clearing triple that made it 4-0 in favor of the Spartans.
- Dominick Curcio singled back up the middle to score Washington and make it 5-0 in favor of AU.
- In the top of the fifth, Gorecki came around to score on a Spencer Ruch ground out, giving AU a 6-0 lead.
- That lead became 7-0 later in the fifth when Holgado singled through the right side to score Washington.
- AU starter Connor Hogan retired the Bethel side in three consecutive innings, as the Spartans held their 7-0 lead going into the eighth inning.
- Bethel did get a runner on in each the eighth and ninth, but never threatened to score which allowed AU to finish with a 7-0 victory.
- This also resulted in a complete game shutout for Hogan, who walked only one batter across the entire game.
