Aurora University Athletics in conjunction with BSN Sports proudly announces the recipients of the BSN Spartan Athletes of the Week award. The honors are earned based on the student-athletes performances on their respective playing surface the previous week.
This week's honors go to AU student-athletes, senior
Josh McLellan of men's volleyball, senior
Nicolina Smith of women's lacrosse and junior
Matt O'Donnell of men's hockey.
Josh McLellan, men's volleyball -Â
McLellan earned the honor after he led Aurora to a 5-0 week with two wins over ranked opponents in California and a pair of wins in the NACC. AU defeated No. 5 Cal Lutheran (3-2) and No. 18 Baldwin-Wallace (3-0) while also adding wins over Kean (3-2), Concordia Wisconsin (3-1) and Lakeland (3-1). McLellan had 75 kills in the five matches, averaging 3.57 per set and hit .359. He had a high of 20 kills to start the week in the win over Kean and added 18 against CUW and had a attack percentage best .625 in the 3-0 win over ranked Baldwin-Wallace.
Nicolina Smith, women's lacrosse -Â
Smith earned the honor after she helped Aurora to a 1-1 trip to the Pacific Northwest with a 11-9 win over Pacific and AU fell 13-8 to Lewis and Clark. Smith collected eight points on the week with seven goals and an assist while also chipping in 10 draw controls and two groundballs. In the 11-9 win at Pacific, Smith had three goals and three draws and added four goals and an assist with seven draws in the game at Lewis and Clark.Â
Matt O'Donnell, men's hockey -Â
O'Donnell earned the honor after he was huge in net for AU in the 6-1 NCAA first round win over St. Johns. He stopped 36 shots on the day, allowing just one goal in the victory. His third period effort, stopping all 18 shots sent his direction was key as AU took a 2-1 lead and won 6-1.
