Aurora University senior first baseman Brett Van Asdlen (Minooka, Ill./Minooka H.S.) was named Northern Athletics Conference Baseball Position Player of the Week for the week ending May 6, 2012.
Van Asdlen had a record-setting week for the Spartans who went 3-0 and captured their first NAC baseball title in the brief history of the conference. Van Asdlen hit .692 in three games with five home runs, one double, 15 runs batted in and six runs scored. In AU's win over Dominican University on Thursday, he hit three home runs, which included a grand slam in the first inning. His 10 runs batted in for the game broke a single-game Aurora record that dated back to 1996.
On the season, Van Asdlen is hitting .377 with 11 doubles, seven home runs, 22 walks, 44 runs scored, 55 runs batted in and is 3-of-4 in stolen bases.
The AU baseball team is 32-8 overall and 18-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference. With the 18-4 conference record, AU captured the 2012 NAC Championship, the school's first in the NAC in baseball and 21st in program history.
The top-seeded Spartans can be seen in action next on Thursday, May 10, 2012, when they take on Dominican University in the 2012 NAC Tournament hosted by Marian University in Fond du lac, Wis. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Marian's Herr-Baker Field.
