The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the 2010 Division III Football All-American team, which includes one member of the Spartans football program, senior defensive back Mike Langhurst (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.). AU finished the season with a 7-3 overall and 5-2 record in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves.
In addition to his All-American honor, Langhurst was named 2010 D3football.com Second-Team All-North Region and Northern Athletics Conference First-Team All-Conference. In his final season with the Spartans, Langhurst led the country with 13 pass break-ups; an AU record-tying 10 interceptions, which is tied for third best in Division III, including one he returned for a touchdown; and 30 tackles.
The Spartans finished the 2010 season averaging 344.5 yards per game of total offense, 92.5 on the ground, 252.0 through the air and scored 27.9 points per game, while the defensive unit allowed 17.6 points per game, 255.9 yards of total offense, 115.4 on the ground and 140.5 through the air.
