The Aurora University Spartan women's soccer team fell to Carroll University in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader at Vago field.
The Spartans come into the game very confident following a 4-0 victory against Saint Mary's College. However, it would prove to be a difficult game for the Spartans as they were out shot by the Pioneers 17 to 8.
The first half proved to be a battle of defense with neither team able to put the ball in the back of the net. AU junior goalie Nicky Cardon came up several diving saves bringing Spartan fans to their feet and totaled four saves in the half.
Cardon's counterpart faced only three shots from the Spartan offense in the first half.
Both teams enter halftime scoreless but would regroup and bring much more energy into the second half.
Less than five minutes into the second period Carroll's freshman midfielder Sarah Tennant would find a breakdown in the Spartan defense and connect with senior forward Cody Callender for the first goal of the game.
Physical play continued between the Spartans and the Pioneers, and in the 72nd minute Callender would score her second goal of the game for the Pioneers giving them a 2-0 lead.
Although down two goals, the Spartans would not back down. In the closing minutes the Spartans would attempt to organize a comeback as junior midfielder Christine Kwilosz scored her second goal of the year in the 85th minute on a sophomore defender Britney Schenck corner kick.
In the closing minutes, the Spartans moved the ball into Pioneer territory on several occasion but were unable to capitalize.
The loss takes the Spartans to 1-1 on the year. They take the field against Lawrence University Sunday Sept 5th once again at Vago field.
