Spartans unable to overcome visiting Carleton Knights

AU's men get ready for their non-conference tilt vs Carleton
Box Score The AU men's basketball team hosted the Knights of Carleton College Saturday afternoon in Thornton
Gymnasium with the visitors capturing a 78-62 win.

The teams played a tight contest in the opening eight minutes with Carleton holding a 15-13 lead but that is when the visitors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) picked up their intensity and built a lead as large as 13 points and the Knights led by 13 (32-19) with 5:30 to play in the opening half.

Not to be out-done, the Spartans went on a 13-4 run to close the lead to four (36-32) on a junior forward Ryan Crow lay-up.

The Knights would be able to hold the lead though and took an eight-point advantage to halftime (42-34).

Carleton out-rebounded AU 26-11 in the first half including an 8-0 advantage on the offensive glass.

The second half played out very much like the opening half in the starting minutes of the second. AU cut the Carleton lead to two (43-41) on a lay-up by junior guard Mike Bumber. That would be as close as the Spartans would get the remainder of the game though as the visitors used their size difference to control the glass at both ends of the court and slowly built a
commanding double-digit lead with eight minutes to play in the contest.

Carleton built a 17-point lead with 3:37 to play and hung on to the eventual 78-62 win.

AU was led by sophomore guard Jordan Hester (17 points) while Bumber (nine points) and sophomore forward Scott Laskowski (nine points) contributed.

Carleton had four players scored in double figures led by sophomore forward Taylor Hanson's double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds.

In the game, Carleton out-rebounded AU 51-25 with a 16-4 margin on the offensive boards.

The Spartans are now 2-3 overall and open Northern Athletics Conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 in Thornton Gymnasium against Rockford College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
