Spartan lacrosse captures first win in program's young history

Meachum had six goals in the Spartans 16-7 win

In just the third time taking the field in the program's first season of NCAA competition, the Aurora University Spartan men's lacrosse program captured its first win in decisive fashion, 16-7 at Randolph

College.

Freshman midfielder Andrew Miller won the opening face off and picked up the ground ball giving AU possession to start the contest and fellow freshman Justin Bose wasted no time tallying the game's first score with 14:25 to play in the first period.

About three minutes later, Randolph tied the game 1-1 with their first goal and the two teams would remained dead-locked over the next six minutes.

When AU freshman midfielder Jack Meachum scored his first of six goals in the game at 5:48 in the first period, the AU scoring had begun. The Spartans scored two more times in the opening period with freshman midfielder Zack Olsen and Meachum tickling the twine.

After a Randolph goal, the first period concluded with a 4-2 Spartan lead. Randolph scored the first goal of the second period with 13:34 to play setting up the next AU scoring streak.

Meachum once again led the Spartan attack with his third goal (12:49) and over the next 8:30 in the second period, the Spartans would score four more goals, by four different players.

The two teams traded goals in the final minutes with AU taking a 10-4 advantage into halftime intermission.

Randolph came out of the halftime session with a flurry of activity, netting two goals in the opening 38 seconds. AU Head Coach Brendan Dawson called a timeout to gather his young Spartans and the words of wisdom from Dawson worked as AU scored four consecutive goals in the third period giving AU a commanding 14-6 lead after three periods.

AU's Bose scored his third goal of the game at the 14:17 point of the fourth period and then assisted on freshman Pat Diorka's second goal of the game. The Diorka goal concluded the games scoring as the AU defense led by goalkeeper Adam Holka proved to strong for the Randolph offense.

As the final horn sounded, the Spartans walked off the field with a 16-7 victory. The win improves the Spartan record to 1-2 on the season.

Game scoring for the Spartans had Meachum with six goals, Bose with three goals and one assist, freshman attackman Alec Downing with two goals and three assists, Olsen with two goal and two assists, freshman attackman Garrett Rosiek had one goal and four assists, Diorka had two goals and Holka earned the win in goal, with four saves.

Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes on Saturday, March 12, 2011 when they travel to Ferrum College. Game time is set noon (est).
