The Aurora University women's soccer season came to a close
Friday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament hosted by Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. The Spartans fell to Calvin College 1-0 in overtime.
During the first half the Spartans dominated the flow of play. While the two teams looked to be evenly matched for the first 15 minutes, the Spartans showed their class for the remainder of the first half by not allowing Calvin a shot for the final 30 minutes.
AU generated a few chances of their own as well as they were able to get of nine shots in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net. Going into the half the Spartans held a 9-3 advantage in shots but were deadlocked on the scoreboard.
AU continued their dominance over the game as the second half began. Senior forward
Raquel Rodriguez forced a diving save from the Calvin keeper in the 55th minute after a creative flick through her legs to the get ball on goal.
With 10 minutes left in the match the Spartans turned up the pressure as they were able to earn four corner kicks over that course of time. Unfortunately for the Spartans they were not able to capitalize on any of those corners and regulation ended with the teams still tied at 0-0, despite AU's 17-7 shot advantage.
Just 19 seconds in the overtime period Calvin played a ball into the Spartan penalty box. The ball bounced loose through the box to Paige Capel. Capel was able to finish the chance, despite AU keeper
Liz Wong coming off of her line to cut down the angle, and give Calvin the win.
With the losse, AU ends the season at
19-2-1 overall, while claiming both the Northern Athletics Conference regular season and tournament chanmpionships.
