Spartans sweep doubleheader with Maranatha

Wilcox powered AU past Maranatha.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AU junior catcher Tristan Wilcox had a big day in leading the Spartan softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Maranatha Baptist Bible College, winning 9-1 (6 innings) and 13-2 (5 innings).

Game One

Maranatha would strike first in the Northern Athletics Conference match-up, scoring in the
top of the first inning with two infield singles.

AU responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning with four hits including a double by junior Brooke Spencer and a three-run home run from Wilcox.

Spencer had a part in the third inning run for AU when she drove in senior Caitlyn Clay. In the fourth inning when AU added three more runs, Clay's two run double was the big hit of that inning.

Spencer and Clay were once again in the action in the game ending inning, the bottom of the sixth. After junior Stephanie Dolce singled, Clay reached to more Dolce into scoring position which Spencer took advantage of, driving in the final run with Dolce crossing the plate,

Freshman pitcher Natalie Zanella earned her 10th win of the season striking out eight.

Game Two

The Spartans carried over the offensive momentum into the second game of the
Caitlyn Clay
doubleheader with Maranatha.

After freshman pitcher Ashley Kellenberger set down the Crusaders in the first, the AU bats went to work scoring three runs on two hits.

The Spartans manufactured four more runs in the second inning after Maranatha pushed across a run of their own in the top of the inning.

Maranatha got another run in the third inning before the AU offense went back to work once more. Freshman Alana Weitzenfeld started off the Spartan attack with a double and five more hits would follow in the inning with a Wilcox two-run home run being the big blow.

After three innings, AU led 13-2 which would be the eventual final score.

With the sweep, AU is now 18-12 overall and 13-3 in the NAC. The next action for the Spartan softball team comes on Sunday, April 22 when they host Edgewood College. Game one is set for noon at the Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora, Ill.
