Box Score Sunday afternoon's Midwest Lacrosse Conference match-up for the Spartans of Aurora University and Britons of Albion College was held in front of a near capacity crowd on Vago Field as AU also hosted a
Lax4Leukemia event. The host Spartans didn't disappoint the home crowd enroute to a 13-9 win, the Spartans school record 12th of the 2012 season.
Albion got the days scoring started 36 seconds into the game and then took a 2-1 lead on a man-up situation after AU freshman
Jordan Williams scored the Spartans first goal of the game off an assist from freshman
Danny Loyall.
The Spartans then went on a 5-0 run for the next 15 minutes which spanned into the second quarter to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Five different Spartans scored with sophomore
Spencer Fuqua, a long-stick midfielder, tallying his first goal of the season in the stretch.
After a Briton score made it a 6-2 game, AU scored two more times with sophomore
Jack Meachum and
freshman
Nolan Miller putting the ball in the net for an 8-3 Spartan halftime lead.
The visiting Britons would come out of the halftime intermission, which had AU raffle off Spartan lacrosse gear and a 50-50 raffle with all proceeds from the AU Lax4Leukemia event going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and make a contest of the game.
Albion scored six of the next nine goals in the third and fourth quarter to cut the Spartan lead to 11-9 with 4:36 remaining in the contest.
But the youthful Spartans would not be rattled as freshman
Max Obriecht won one of his 18 faceoffs on the day which then led to a Williams goal off an assist from sophomore
Garret Rosiek. Obriecht finished 18-of-22 in faceoffs on the day while picking up 18 ground balls as well.
AU's Miller finished the days scoring and locked up the 13-9 win with his third goal of the game with 2:35 to play in the game. He was assisted by Rosiek who had three assists and a goal in the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Adam Holka earned his 12th win of the season (12-3) with seven saves and Loyall (two goals and two assists) and Williams (two goals) were among the other AU top performers in the game.
AU improved to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the MLC and will be in action next on Wednesday,
May 2 when they host the College of Mount St. Joseph in the semi-final round of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on Vago Field.
