Spartans women open 2012 with 2-1 win

Box Score The AU women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 2-1 win over the visiting Lady Reds of
Carthage College giving Spartan head coach Troy Edwards his first AU victory.

Both teams played to a 0-0 tie going into overtime despite the Spartans having numerous quality scoring chances, hitting the goal post three times.

AU out-shot Carthage 14-3 in the first-half with Spartan junior goalkeeper Liz Wong picking up three saves while Carthage goalkeeper Abigail Alm had six.

The second-half saw the Lady Reds jump out to a 1-0 lead 6:11 into the half. Carthage senior Rachel Jason snuck a shot past Wong off an assist from
sophomore Jessica Soch.

AU responded immediately (1:44 later) with senior Kaitlyn Crohan dishing a beautiful pass to sophomore Nicole Wolfe who blistered a shot past Alm to tie the game with 37 minutes remaining.

After the Spartans had numerous scoring chances,
hitting the post three more times including on a free-kick, AU took the lead with just under 16 minutes to play.

AU freshman Nicci Bermudes tallied her first collegiate goal, giving the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

The win gave AU a 1-0 record and the Spartans can be seen in action next on Sunday, September 2 when they host Carroll University on Vago Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
