Box Score The Spartan women's soccer team finished out their season opening weekend with their second consecutive victory with a 4-1 win over Carroll University.
AU struck first when senior
Kaitlyn Crohan buried a cross from freshman
Nicci Bermudes at the 6:39 mark of the first half. Although the Spartans had the edge in shots over Carroll in the first half the Pioneers were able to draw level when a scramble in the penalty box led to a Pioneer goal by Sarah Tennant. The first half ended with the teams knotted up with 1 goal a piece.
The Spartans took almost no time to break the dead lock once the second half began when sophomore
Nicole Wolfe scored an unassisted goal just 2:07 into
the period.
Wolfe was not done though, as she capitalized on a penalty kick just 17 seconds later when Crohan was brought down inside the box. Wolfe's seconf goal in 17 seconds gave AU a commanding 3-1 lead.
AU reinforced their lead in the 74th minute when junior
Kristina Umlauf blasted a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the
net from a junior
Mariah Ziegenbein pass. The Spartans would not look back from there closing out the game by not allowing Carroll another quality scoring opportunity.
AU goalkeeper
Liz Wong had two saves for her second win of the season.
The win improves the Spartans' record to 2-0 while dropping Carroll to 0-1-1. The women's soccer team will travel to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin on Wednesday,
September 5 and take on Marian University in their first Northern Athletics Conference game of the year.
