The Aurora University men's track team competed in a non-scoring event at Lewis University on Friday, January 11 to open the 2013 season. AU surprised the competition with multiple athletes making finals, as well as freshman
Nick Williams setting multiple school records in his first collegiate meet.
Williams set AU records in the long jump (6.99 meters) and triple jump (13.62 meters). He placed first in the long jump, and third in the triple jump. “It would have been nice to win both events, but I know that the two guys that beat me in the triple are seniors,” said Williams “I am not disappointed.”
Sophomore
Loren Iwanicki made the finals and placed third in the high jump. Despite missing his final jump, Iwanicki's measure of 1.87 meters has him ranked No. 50 in the nation. “I am just glad to be competing for AU again,” said Iwanicki. “It surprises me that I am actually ranked.”
Throwers
Zach Burke and
Adam Blake both made finals in the men's shot put throw. This marks Burke's and Blake's first finals appearance in their respective careers. “After what I saw today, I think Zach and Adam sneak up and get us some points in throwing events at our conference meet,” said coach
Ryan Chapman.
Next action for the Spartan men's track and field team comes on Friday, January 18 when they travel to North Central College for the Cardinal Opener. Meet time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
