Box Score The Aurora University softball team used timely offense and took advantage of errors to knock Anderson University to the loser's bracket with a 6-2 victory in game 7 of the 2013 NCAA Division III Angola Softball Regional.
Anderson scored one run in the second inning off Spartan freshman pitcher
Vanessa Hartzell but AU responded with one run in the
third. AU freshman
Lauren Huebner led off the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly-out by senior Tristan WIlcox.
The game was tied until the fifth inning when Aurora scored two runs against Anderson losing pitcher freshman Sami Frazier. Huebner started the effort when she singled to the shortstop and stole second. After junior
Rebecca Randall singled to the pitcher, Lynch laid down a squeeze bunt that brought Huebner home. Senior
Mia Henderson then singled and advanced to third on a throwing error allowing Randall to score.
“We executed well with well-placed bunts and timely hits,” Aurora head coach
Mike McKenzie said. "Those hits took the pressure off the defense."
Aurora scored three more runs in the top of the seventh. Randall was safe on an error and advanced to second on the throw. Lynch laid down a bunt and made it to first on an error and Randall moved to third. Wilcox doubled to left field, bringing in both runners and increasing their lead to 5-1.
“I was in kind of a slump and the hit was a big turnaround for me,” Wilcox said after the game.
“Our speed at the bottom of the order has been good all year and puts pressure on the defense,” coach McKenzie said. “Quick kids put pressure on every team.”
AU freshman
Dani Bestwina ran for Wilcox and she advanced to third on Henderson's sacrifice bunt. Senior
Brooke Spencer singled to center field and Bestwina scored, leaving it at 6-1 when it was Anderson's turn to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
Anderson put runners on base, but managed just a run on a fielder's choice by Katy Ogden.
Aurora, now 39-6 overall in 2013, will play Allegheny College in game 11 at 2:00 p.m. (est) on
Saturday, May 11 in Angola, Indiana.
