#18 Spartans defeat Benedictine 5-0 in women's soccer

Box Score Coming in to the first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women's soccer contest of 2013 and fresh off being ranked in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division III Women's Soccer Top 25 poll, the Aurora University women's soccer team easily handled the visiting Eagles of Benedictine University 5-0 on Vago Field.

AU got on the scoreboard early and often with sophomore Nicci Bermudes scoring the eventual game winning goal 5:28 into the game. She was assisted by junior Nicole Wolfe on the play.

Junior Lisa Bajkowski tallied her second goal of the season just 2:10 later off an assist from senior Mariah Ziegenbein to give the Spartans a quick 2-0 advantage.

Nine minutes later Wolfe and Bermudes teamed up again with Bermudes feeding Wolfe for her team leading fifth goal of the season.

Just over 11 minutes later, Bermudes tallied her second assist of the game, this time finding junior Lorelei Ritzert who knocked home her first goal of 2013 and gave the Spartans a
commanding 4-0 lead.

With 7:32 left on the scoreboard, mother nature got in on the games action, a lightning strike near-by had fans and teams on the move for cover. After an approximately 40 minute delay play would resume.

With 1:49 on the clock, senior Danielle Gillberg scored the half's fifth goal and her first of the season. She was assisted by fellow senior Erin Aragon.

As the teams entered a shortened halftime intermission, AU led 5-0. The Spartans out shot Benedictine 28-4 in the first half with AU goalkeeper Maddy Crawford coming up with two
saves.

The second half saw AU Head Coach Troy Edwards play all healthy Spartans and AU coasted to a 5-0 win.

AU is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Saturday, September 14 when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Platteville, Wis.
