With 2014 Homecoming events in full force, the Aurora University Volleyball team took to the spotlight in Thornton Gymnasium against the visiting Marian University Sabres on
Saturday morning. AU rolled the visiting Sabres in a dominant show of force, winning the game in a quick 3 sets to none 25-16, 25-11, 25-15.
The Spartans opened their first set with a stunning rally, building on momentum obtained from the previous nights victory, taking the shocked Sabres by surprise. With
Brooke Pylant serving AU expanded their small lead to 10-6 and
Lexi O'Boyle would later push the lead even larger to 17-9 before coasting to the 25-16 win.
The second and third set would be the same story for the Spartans. AU dominated Marian in the second set, winning by the large margin of 25-11. This made the game 2-0 for the Spartans.
In the third set the visitors from Marian would not go down without a fight. With the Spartans jumping ahead, the Sabres were able to claw to within three to make the score 10-7. Led by sophomore
Peyton McKenzie and Pylant, the Spartans surged ahead totaling 14 kills on 26 attempts in the third set.
On the day, Pylant had 12 kills, McKenzie
had 11 kills, O'Boyle had 18 assists and five digs, and junior
Destiny Stuersel had 14 assists and 10 digs.
With the win, AU is now 19-7 overall and 5-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Next action for the Spartan volleyball team comes on
Tuesday, October 14, when they travel to Benedictine University for a conference rivalry match up. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lisle, Illinois.
