Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

AU honors men's soccer seniors before 2-2 tie with BU

The Aurora University Men's Soccer team hosted the Eagles of Benedictine University on AU senior day Wednesday afternoon. The longtime rivals battled to an eventual 2-2 double overtime tie.

Aurora and Benedictine played hard in the first half and traded scoring opportunities with neither team able to beat the opposing goalkeeper. AU senior Emmanuel Denton had the first scoring opportunity for AU but put the ball just wide of the net. Benedictine traded its own scoring opportunity 30 minutes into the half when Nick Kapetanos had a header that was stopped by a diving save from AU senior goalkeeper Chris Donner

The teams went into halftime knotted at zero.

The Spartans came out ready to play in the second half, pressuring the Benedictines defense and goalie.

In the 52nd minute, AU's Kyle Pierson passed the ball to Jacob Goehring who fired the ball past the outstretched Eagle goalies arms. With the goal, the Spartans would take the early second half lead 1-0.

Benedictine would have an answer though, in the 61st minute Kapetanos would get past AU defense and score to tie the game at 1. Benedictine would score just 5 minutes later to take their first lead of the day, 2-1.

Just over one minute later after the Eagles took the 2-1 lead, AU senior Jason O'Brien snuck past the BU defense and drilled one past the goalie to tie the game, 2-2.

Regulation would play out and AU and BU would head into overtime 2-2.

AU's Ian Connelly had a prime time opportunity but was denied by the BU defense and goalie, that would be the only opportunity from either team in the first overtime.

The second overtime was more physical than rest of the game but both teams traded scoring opportunities. Ultimately the Spartans and Eagles would end in a tie 2-2.

With the tie, AU is now 11-4-3 overall and 6-3-1 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on Sunday, November 2 when they host the opening round of the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. AU will take on either Concordia University Wisconsin or Edgewood College at 12:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
