In the first NCAA Division III hockey contest for the Aurora University Spartans, AU traveled north to the University of Wisconsin - Superior to take on the Yellowjackets.
AU Head Coach
Ryan Buchanan opened the Spartans first game with a line of
Paul Lochner,
Sheldon Kihle,
Justin Gregory a forward, a defensive paring of
Connor Quinn and
Nicholas Desimone and goaltender
Kyle Weiner.
The Spartans fell behind in the first period when UW-Superior scored at 4:01 of the period. The game remained a 1-0 contest until late in the period when the Yellowjackets were able to get a shot past Weiner and a 2-0 deficit for the Spartans.
Just before the end of the first period, Spartan forward Jow Jablonski was called for a tripping penalty giving Superior a power play that would carry over into the second period.
The Yellowjackets would capitalize on the power play just 12 seconds into the second period, putting the Spartans down 3-0 early in the second.
AU would score the program's first goal only 21 seconds later when
Rihards Marenis assisted
Michael Mikulan for the first goal of the 2014-2015 season and the first in the program's young history as a Division III program.
UW-Superior did score three more goals, one on the power play, in the second period and led AU 6-1 heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, the Spartans would score the lone goal at 8:57. This time the Spartans scored just six seconds into a power play. Marenis took the puck after a faceoff win, skated to the front of the Yellowjacket net and sniped a wrist shot past the goalie for AU's second goal of the game.
Both teams saw scoring chances in the final 10 minutes but neither lit the lamp with the game finishing as a 6-2 score.
With the loss, AU is now 0-1 on the season. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on
Saturday, November 1 when they take on UW-Superior. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Superior, Wisconsin.
