The Aurora University football team held their last home game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Concordia University Chicago and honored the senior class of 2014 in a pregame ceremony. After jumping out to a 13-0 first half lead, AU would fall 14-13.
Â
AU took the opening kickoff and marched down the field on the Cougars after a personal foul on the kickoff aided the Spartans field position. The 11 play drive was capped off by a 34-yard field goal from
Krystian Chudoba and a 3-0 AU lead.
The first quarter would end with that same 3-0 AU advantage with the Spartans out-gaining CUC 135 to 31 with a 23 to 7 play advantage.
As the second quarter began, AU had the ball and was on the move. A 10-play 62-yard drive finished with a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Drew Cole to running back
Jake Apple. After the extra point by Chudoba was good, AU led 10-0.
On the ensuing Cougar drive, AU linebacker
Jordan Linson intercepted a pass and after a 15-yard return, AU had the ball at the Cougar 18 yard line. The AU offense was unable to capitalize though, settling for a 33-yard Chudoba field goal and a 13-0 lead.
Concordia found the end zone right before the half, scoring on a 47-yard touchdown run. At the half, AU led 13-7.
The third quarter was scoreless thanks to a Concordia penalty on what looked to be a 93-yard punt return for a touchdown by Ryan Allison. But the illegal block at the 16 yard line brought the score off the scoreboard.
AU would turn the ball over on the following Cougar punt when Spartan punt returner
Danny Logiurato fumbled the return giving the Cougars the ball at the AU 46 with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter,
Concordia carried the drive into the fourth quarter and scored four plays into the final session to take a 14-13 lead, the eventual final score.
With the loss, AU is now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan football team comes on Saturday, November 8 when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
