In the second game of a two game set at the University of Wisconsin - Superior, the Aurora University hockey team lost to the host Yellowjackets 6-3.
The teams played a scoreless first period with AU being out shot 21 to 3 in the period and Spartan freshman goalie
Griffin Strain coming up with some tremendous saves to keep AU in the game.
The second period would be much different as the teams combined to score six goals and the Spartans holding an 18 to 12 shot advantage.
UW-Superior opened up the scoring at 6:07 of the second period for a 1-0 lead. Just under four minutes later, the Spartans evened up the score. Spartans
Trevor Hoth scored his first collegiate goal with assists coming from
Anthony Pnewski and
Ryan Davlantes.
The hosts would score the next two goals, 29 seconds apart at 13:20 and 13:49 to take a 3-1 lead, one which they would not surrender.
The Spartans would answer right back though, scoring just 19 seconds later with
Nicholas Desimone finding the back of the net, he was unassisted.
UW-Superior scored the final goal of the second period at 15:56 and then added two more goals in the third period at 6:38 and 10:27 to take a 6-2 lead.
AU was not done scoring though, as
Rihards Marenis scored his team-leading second goal of the season at 14:45 with assists coming from Ron Lingren and
Michael Mikulan.
The 6-3 score would hold up over the final five minutes and with the loss AU is now 0-2 on the season. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on
Friday, November 7 when they travel to Champaign, Illinois to take on the University of Illinois ACHA Division I team. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
