Lake Forest College was the site for the Aurora University Spartan women's soccer teams 11th appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships on chilly Saturday afternoon. The many AU fans in attendance would witness history as AU went into overtime for the third consecutive season in the NCAA Tournament but this time coming away with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against Concordia College-Moorhead, the first for an AU women's soccer team in 11 tries.
AU got on the scoreboard early in the first half as the Spartans dominated play in the first 13 minutes. Spartan senior
Brittany Roydhouse sent in a corner that found the head of senior
Lisa Bajkowski. Bajkowski flipped the ball to the right foot of freshman
Alexis Bejarano who found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
After AU took the lead, the Cobbers from Concordia Moorhead picked up the tempo and pressured the Spartan defense and goalkeeper
Rachael Warnock. But Warnock stood strong and sent the teams into halftime with AU leading 1-0.
Early in the second half Concordia continued the attack. In the 49th minute, the Cobbers would tie the game courtesy of a Spartan own goal. Concordia's Emily Wendorff sent a cross to the front of the AU goal that a Spartan defender miss hit and into the back of the goal for a 1-1 game.
AU responded and turned the momentum of the game and hounded the Cobbers in the offensive zone, eventually out shooting them 14-6 but the several scoring chances were thwarted by the Concordia goalkeeper.
As regulation wound down, AU found themselves in very familiar territory, overtime in the NCAA Tournament.
The Spartans had the only two shots of the overtime session that was ended at 94:04 when
Alisha Oseguera found the ball on her right foot approximately 25 yards out of the goal. Oseguera hammered a shot that went beyond the outstretched arms of the Cobber goalie, giving AU the dramatic 2-1 win.
