Overtime goal lifts Spartan women into NACC Tournament Final

The Aurora University women's soccer team hosted the Stars of Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon in the semi-final round the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament #NACCsoctrn.

The first half heavily favored the Spartans, pressuring the Stars defense with a nine to two shot advantage. In the 11th minute, freshman Alexis Bejarano heel touched the ball off a cross from senior Lisa Bajkowski in front of the Dominicans goal. Just before the ball could cross the goalline, Spartan junior Nicci Bermudes made sure the ball found the back of the net for her 31st goal of the season and an early 1-0 lead.

With the goal, Bermudes scored her 31st goal of the season, giving her the single season record for goals scored in a season, breaking a record that stood since 1998 (Chrissy Plucinski).

The Spartans defense was able to shut down the Stars in the first half not allowing a shot on goal in the half and would go into the intermission leading 1-0.

Early in the 2nd half (49:11), Dominican's Taylor Adler fired the ball just past the outstretched AU Rachel Warnock to tie the game at one. The Dominican goal ended a shutout streak for Aurora that lasted 500:11.

Aurora and Dominican fought back and forth exchanging scoring opportunities over the next 15 minutes. In the 65th minute, AU's Bermudes took a corner kick and placed it right in the front of the net where senior Brittany Roydhouse punched it into the back of the net to bring the Spartans the lead 2-1.

But only four minutes later, Dominican found themselves in a scoring position and capitalized to knot the game at 2. Kelli Iovino was credited with the goal.

AU battled and had numerous opportunities including a breakaway by Bermudes but her shot went just wide and the Spartans were unable to score. AU and DU would head into overtime tied at 2.

In the first overtime, the Spartans went on the attack and 3:16 into the overtime session, AU would get to celebrate. The scoring combination of Bermudes and Roydhouse struck once again with Bermudes crossing a pass to the front of the net and Roydhouse powering her shot through the Star defense giving the Spartans the thrilling 3-2 overtime win.

With the win, AU is now 16-3-1 overall. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Saturday, November 8 when they host Concordia University Wisconsin in the 2014 NACC Tournament Championship. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
