The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Volleyball Tournament Semi-Final round on Thursday night saw a rematch of a nail-biting five set match up to open the NACC regular season between the Aurora University Spartans and the Dominican University Stars.
Despite the location changing, the match-up live up to the hype with the set going the distance once again. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the outcome was the same as earlier in the season with Dominican finishing the Spartans 2014 season 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 11-15).
The opening set saw AU jump out to a quick lead and hold it throughout for the 25-21 win with
Nicole Kirsner and
Peyton McKenzie each having four kills.
Dominican took the second set, breaking open an 11-11 tie and running to a 25-16 win but the Spartans responded to take the third set and be one set win from advancing to the NACC Tournament Final. AU held a commanding 16-7 lead in the third set and held off a late Star rally for the win. McKenzie had 10 kills in the set.
The fourth set was controlled from the start by the Stars who had to hold off a late Spartan rally for the 25-22 win and the decisive fifth set.
The fifth set was close just as the previous nine sets the two teams had played against each other. With the set tied at 7, Dominican's vertan experience stepped up and held off the young Spartans 15-11.
McKenzie led all hitters with 26 kills with senior
Lexi O'Boyle having 26 assists and
Destiny Stuersel leading the team with 15 digs.
The volleyball team concludes the 2014 season with a 23-12 overall record and were 7-4 in the NACC.
