In the final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest of the 2014 season, the Aurora University football team traveled to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College. After a high scoring first half that saw AU take a 21-17 lead into halftime, neither team got much offense going in the second half with WLC having the lone touchdown for the 24-21 AU loss.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored on their second drive of the game courtesy of a 22-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Spartans answered immediately with a nine play 75 yard drive that was capped off with a 42-yard touchdown pass from
Drew Cole to
Danny Logiurato. Logiurato took a slant pass to the house for the 6-3 lead. The Spartans then converted a two-point try with
Brandon Evans completing the pass to Pat DeVries and an 8-3 AU lead.
Late in the half, AU struck again, this time on special teams. Spartan
Jaylen Robinson blocked a Warrior punt that senior
Zach Laud scopped up and returned for the touchdown. A second two-point conversion try failed and AU led 14-3 after one quarter.
On the opening drive of the second quarter, the Spartan defense made a big play. Senior linebacker
Tanner Wilcox intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards to the WLC 10 yard line. Three plays later Cole ran in from six yards out for a 21-3 lead after the
Krystian Chudoba point after kick.
Wisconsin Lutheran would snap the Spartans scoring run though on the next drive. The home team took 12 plays and 75 yards over 4:24 to score a touchdown and cut the AU lead to 21-10.
After AU was forced to punt on the next drive, WLC struck again. On the fifth play, WLC dashed 22 yards for a touchdown and AU now led 21-17, which would be the halftime score. WLC would threaten late in the second quarter but a fumble on the AU one yard line would be recovered in the end zone by
Sedric Stewart.
The third quarter was not pretty for either team as each team had two turnovers and four punts and the Warriors turning the ball over on downs.
After the teams each traded punts to start the fourth quarter, WLC took advantage of their second drive. The home team marched 79 yards in 11 plays to take the 24-21 lead with 6:59 left in the game.
The Spartan defense forced a turnover on downs to set the offense up late in the game. But a Cole interception with one minute left to play ended the Spartans come back chances.
On the day, Logiurato finished with seven catches for 111 yards and a touchdown to lead the offense and Wilcox finished the day with 18 tackles, a forced fumble, a pass break-up and one interception.
With the loss, AU is now 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan football team comes on
Saturday, November 15 when they travel to Albion College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. EST (12:00 p.m. Aurora time) in Albion, Michigan.
