The Aurora University hockey team found themselves in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Saturday evening to take on the Finlandia University Lions. AU fell in a 4-2 contest.
With 18 seconds left in the first period AU found themselves down 1-0 as the host Lions lit the lamp just before heading to the first intermission. Spartan goaltender Grifin Strain had 12 saves in the first period.
Finlandia added to their lead in the second period scoring twice at 8:46 and 14:24 for a 3-0 AU deficit.
The Spartans answered quickly after the third goal, 50 seconds later when
Robert Gervino scored with an assist from
Cameron Choate. 3-1 was the score at the second intermission.
In the third period, Spartan
Andrew Bergquist took a boarding penalty and put the Spartans a man-down. Just under a minute into the penalty kill, sophomores
Ryan Davlantes and
Joe Jablonski teamed up to pull the Spartans within a goal. Jablonski got the goal with the assist going to Davlantes.
At 13:56 of the third, Finlandia beat Strain to regain a two goal lead at 4-2.
The Spartans pulled Strain for the final 1:24 but could not solve the Lion goaltender and lost 4-2. With the loss, AU is now 1-9 in the NCAA and 6-10 overall.
