The Aurora University hockey team took on the Lions of Finlandia University in the second game of the weekend series in Hancock, Michigan. The teams played to a 2-2 tie through overtime.
Finlandia got the only goal of the first period at 16:24 when James Devlin beat AU goaltender
Kyle Weiner to take a 1-0 lead. Weiner had 12 of his 32 saves in the period.
The Spartans evened up the game early in the second period with
Paul Lochner scoring at 3:52 and was assisted by
Robert Gervino and
Conor Jonasson.
The lead was short lived though as Finlandia scored 34 seconds later to retake the lead at 2-1. The game would remain a 2-1 deficit for the SPartans into the third period.
In the third AU evened the score once again at 8:58. The Spartans top line of
Trevor Hoth and
Michael Mikulan with defenseman
Gregory Sauers teamed up for the goal. Hoth found the back of the net with assists from Mikulan and Sauers.
Weiner and Finlandia goalie Walker Enstad made the tie hold up through overtime for the final 2-2 result. Walker had 27 saves keeping AU from the win.
With the tie, AU is now 1-9-1 in the NCAA on the season. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on
Friday, January 2, 2015 when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. in River Falls, Wisconsin.
