In the first contest for an Aurora University team in 2015, the Spartan hockey team found themselves in River Falls, Wisconsin at the No. 6 ranked Falcons. The Spartans held a lead in the third period before the highly ranked Falcons defeated AU 4-3.
AU fell behind early in the first period and seven minutes into the game found themselves down 2-0 to the Falcons.
With 30 seconds remaining in the opening period AU found themselves on the power play and the specialty unit took advantage of the opportunity. With one second left on the game clock
Rihards Marenis scored with an assist from
Trevor Hoth.
The Spartans scored the only goal in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. At 13:59 senior
Jimmie Perkins scored with an assist going to
Connor Quinn.
Through two periods, AU goaltender
Griffin Strain had 26 saves to keep the Spartans in the contest and tied going into the second intermission.
In the third period the Spartans found themselves back on the power play and once again took the man advantage to good use. At 7:12 and 44 seconds into the power play,
Michael Mikulan scored with assists from Marenis and
Gregory Sauers. With the goal, AU held a 3-2 third period lead.
But 1:45 after, River Falls tied the game back up at 3-3 and with just under six minutes to go, the home team took a 4-3 advantage. The score would be the final score.
With the loss, AU is now 1-10-1 in the NCAA and 6-11-1 overall. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on
Saturday, January 3, 2015 when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. in River Falls, Wisconsin.
